Project: Mini book

The project we have chosen to do with kids is a minibook. We have decided to present is as a cooperative activity to do in pairs or small groups.

We will provide the groups a template so they can fill with the information they think is more appropriate, as well as decorate it.

It is a timeline shaped as a minibook. In each page kids will have to write and draw all the stages we have worked with in class. The flash presentations is very useful for them as it summarizes the information from the next book.

With this project we will have to provide kids with self and peer assessment tools.
  • A checklist to make sure that they include all the important stages and that they have written down certain key aspects.
  • A rubric to evaluate their own effort and motivation.
  • A rubric to evaluate their peers in their group work.

RATIONALE

WHAT?
We have chosen to work on this topic as a curricular oriented project. Here you have some digital material to make the content more accessible and exciting for kids.
WHY?
History is traditionally a subject believed to be boring by some kids. Pedagogically we might not been teaching it right because we think it is quite an exciting topic,  but kids don’t feel like that.

We would like to raise awareness in the importance of knowing history and make learning about it fun and engaging for our children.
HOW?
This exercise is really useful for formative assessment which will give us feedback along the learning process. We need to activate prior knowledge and raise expectations about the topic. To promote deeper thinking and making students aware of their learning we have decided to create a Padlet Board with two questions that the students have to answer online.
      1. What I already know about prehistory? I know…..
      2. What do I want to learn about it? I am interested in knowing about….
  1. Content:
We have prepared a flash presentation that divides information in different events, which is extremely useful for teaching history. With this presentation students can clearly see the length of periods in prehistory in a visual way. Events created in each period represent a specific milestone inside a timeline. For example, showing the oldest paintings found, when humans started using agriculture, the use of fire, etc.
With this tool we want to make the presentation of content more visual and fun. Students can access to it whenever they want from the school or from home, as it will be posted on the class blog.
Quizziz is a tool that allows us to create quizzes in any topic we like. It is cross-platform, so it works in different devices. We like this tool because the teacher can monitor the students results live. This way while students are playing at their own pace, teachers can see the questions students are having more problems with.
The timer also shows other students results, which can be motivating for students.
When they finish, students can review their answers while they wait for the other students to finish.
It can be used in a competitive way or in groups as a questionnaire to fill in, in a collaborative way. This activity can be used to revise content and also to assess the knowledge of students, or even as homework.

KLW Board

We will do this activity at the begining of the unit and at the end. This exercise is really useful for formative assessment which will give us feedback along the learning process.
We use this technique to need to activate prior knowledge and raise expectations about the topic. It also gives them a purpose on active learning as they think and decide what are their personal interests, and give the teachers invaluable information about intrinsic motivation.
To promote deeper thinking and making students aware of their learning we have decided to create a Padlet Board with two questions that the students have to answer online.

      1. What I already know about prehistory? I know…..
      2. What do I want to learn about it? I am interested in learning about….

This Padlet Board will be revisited for feedback at the end of the unit to answer 'What have we learnt?', to see how their expectations were fulfilled and to reflect upon learning.
